Swine CAFOs

چکیده

husbandry practices in the United States have been industrialized, resulting in an increased number of large corporate and contract livestock operations raising thousands of animals in a single facility. Industrialized farms achieve economies of scale through specialization, increased size, and close confinement that allows high animal densities on relatively small land areas (1,2). These changes in animal production systems, combined with changing community demographics, have considerably narrowed the farm–urban interface and have resulted in growing public concern over the potential occupational, environmental, and community hazards posed by these large concentrated animal feeding operations (CAFOs). Numerous debates and related legislation over this controversial topic have brought to the public forefront several health issues related to modern swine husbandry.

Doctor-diagnosed health problems in a region with a high density of concentrated animal feeding operations: a cross-sectional study

BACKGROUND There is growing interest in health risks of residents living near concentrated animal feeding operations (CAFOs). Previous research mostly focused on swine CAFOs and self-reported respiratory conditions. The aim was to study the association between the presence of swine, poultry, cattle and goat CAFOs and health of Dutch neighbouring residents using electronic medical records from g...

Race, Poverty, and Potential Exposure of Middle-School Students to Air Emissions from Confined Swine Feeding Operations

Previous studies suggest that airborne effluent from swine confined animal feeding operations (CAFOs) may affect the health and quality of life of adults and the prevalence of asthma symptoms among children. To investigate the extent to which public school students may be exposed to airborne effluent from swine CAFOs and to evaluate the association between schools' demographic characteristics a...

Pigs in Space: Determining the Environmental Justice Landscape of Swine Concentrated Animal Feeding Operations (CAFOs) in Iowa

Given the primacy of Iowa in pork production for the U.S. and global markets, we sought to understand if the same relationship with traditional environmental justice (EJ) variables such as low income and minority populations observed in other concentrated animal feeding operation (CAFO) studies exists in the relationship with swine CAFO densities in Iowa. We examined the potential for spatial c...

Public health concerns for neighbors of large-scale swine production operations.

This article provides a review and critical synthesis of research related to public health concerns for neighbors exposed to emissions from large-scale swine production operations. The rapid industrialization of pork production in the 1990s produced a generation of confined animal feeding operations (CAFOs) of a size previously unseen in the U.S. Recent research and results from federally spons...

Swine CAFOs & Novel H1N1 Flu: Separating Facts from Fears

W ith cases documented in more than 170 countries, the global swine f lu pandemic that erupted in spring 2009 remains a serious public health problem. Caused by a strain of H1N1 influenza virus, which is normally found in pigs, the flu now known as novel H1N1 has so far been less severe than regular seasonal flu in terms of deaths and hospitalizations. Yet given its remarkable capacity for huma...
